Impact of Noise on your sleep cycle

At the end of every day, we all need to get enough sleep. Sleep gives your body a chance to
recharge and helps you get back on your feet after the day’s activities. Lack of sleep due to
the impact of noise is linked to several health problems, and many people find it hard to get
into a regular sleep pattern. Getting up at the wrong time during your cycle is a common
problem. This can make you feel extra groggy and tired, no matter how long you’ve been
asleep.
So, what can change the way you sleep? Well, it’s not a big surprise that noise makes it hard
to sleep. If you can’t fall asleep or keep waking up in the middle of the night, it could be
because of all the sounds and noises that are still going on around you. Talking to an
audiologist is a good idea if you want to learn more about this and what you can do to stop
it. We’ll talk about how noise can affect your sleep cycle in more depth below.

Noise and Can't Sleep

People often have trouble sleeping at night because they have insomnia. People often can’t
fall asleep because there is too much noise going on around them. Someone sleeping in a
busy city with lots of cars, noise from bars, and people walking around outside is a typical
example of this. You can’t find peace and relax because there are too many things going on
around you.
Strangely enough, people who have trouble hearing can also have trouble sleeping. You
might think that not being able to hear noises around you would make it easier to sleep. On
the other hand, hearing loss is usually accompanied by ringing in the ears, which is called
tinnitus. This noise can be very annoying and make it hard to fall asleep or feel calm.
In both cases, your sleep cycle is thrown off from the start because you don’t go to bed when
you should. Because of this, you’ll sleep less, which means you’ll wake up at the wrong time
in your sleep cycle and feel tired in the morning.

Noise and Fragmented Sleep

Noise can also mess up your sleep cycle by making you wake up often during the night.
When you wake up in the middle of the night, sometimes more than once. There are
different sounds that can wake you up and others that don’t. Most of the time, you will wake
up because of something very loud and sudden. This could be a car backfiring, a cat
knocking over some trash cans outside, someone shouting in the street, or a baby crying.
Again, if you’re in a place where there are a lot of sounds at night, it’s likely that you’ll wake
up more than once. When you wake up, it throws off the pattern of your sleep. This makes it
harder to wake up in the morning feeling rested. Even if you go to bed at 10 p.m. and wake
up at 8 a.m., you might still feel tired. When you keep track of your sleep, you can see how
long you slept and how many times you woke up during the night. Even if you were only
awake for a few minutes each time, that’s all it takes to mess up your sleep cycle and make
you feel tired.

How to keep noise from making it hard for you to sleep

You can stop noises from messing up your sleep cycle, which is good news. You can do one
of two things, depending on what sounds are bothering you. If you can’t sleep because you
live in a noisy place, you should work on making your bedroom less noisy. This means you
should try the following:

  • Earplugs made especially for sleeping
  • Putting in new windows that block out noise better
  • Getting thick curtains to try to block out sounds from outside
  • When you sleep, you close the windows.

If you have trouble sleeping because of tinnitus caused by hearing loss, you should talk to an
audiologist about getting help. People often tell people with tinnitus to use white noise
machines to help them forget about the sound. White noise, on the other hand, has been
linked to better sleep because it helps you relax and fall asleep quickly.
